The amethyst is referred to in Scottish Prisoner, Chapter 38: Redux, we learn that Jamie keeps a raw amethyst to remind him of Claire. Amethyst is thought to have supernatural powers and bring luck. Its color and beauty are without rival, even from other much more expensive purple gems. The color purple denotes royalty, and the rich and powerful have worn it as a mark of rank for hundreds of years. Jamie chose a most suitable stone to represent Claire. (credit tapatalk.com)
In medieval times, the amethyst soothed those who were stressed and alerted wearers to traces of poison. Its medicinal ability evokes an image of Claire the physician.
